Todd Soares and Jay Hall are avid cyclists and physical therapists. Their practice, North Santa Rosa Physical Therapy, is one of our major sponsors. As a mere lad, Jay began working with Todd as a P.T. aide. Now ten years later, they continue working together, helping people recover from injuries. Almost 30 years ago, Todd found himself drawn to physical therapy. He had a general interest in medical science and exercise but also a passion to be the guy “who helped others get moving and walking again.” Jay on the other hand, had a more personal experience with physical therapy. Ailed with shoulder injuries, which eventually led to surgery, Jay experienced first-hand how beneficial and crucial physical therapy is for a full recovery.
This dynamic duo uses a variety of techniques and modalities to get their patients up and running again. First they begin with a subjective interview, followed by a more in depth musculoskeletal assessment. A popular tool they use is electrical stimulation. The use of electrical stimulation serves to reduce pain; it alters pain pathways by activating larger muscle fibers in the surrounding injured area. When they’re not hooking their patients up to electricity, Todd and Jay will use manual therapy. This encompasses joint mobilization as well as soft tissue mobilization. Finally, and just as important, is strengthening the newly healed area. These guys not only have patients do specific exercises for the affected area, but also work on the surrounding muscles to keep them big and strong.
Todd and Jay have a well rounded practice, but they do love working with athletes, especially cyclists. They both know the rigors and stress cyclists endure in this physically and mentally demanding sport. They also know the importance of bike fit or ergonomics. Whether the cyclist injured themselves from over-use, crashing, or improper bike fit, Todd and Jay will give the athlete a meticulous fitting, preventing them from re-injury and enabling a full recovery.
In closing, Todd and Jay rock! They both agree that seeking out a healthcare practitioner who knows the sport and understands athletes is critical. If you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment, give North Santa Rosa Physical Therapy a call at 707 523-2848.
