Mariko Fischer

Road Category: 4
Mountain Category: Beginner
Racing since: 2007
How she became a bike racer: I wanted to ride my bike with girls instead of boys all the time, and the girls I was riding with thought it was a good idea, so I gave it a shot.
Hometown: Sagamiono, Japan
Current residence: Santa Rosa, CA
Education: BS, Kinesiology
Day job: Bike shop girl
Favorite NorCal memory: At my expense, probably falling over after hitting the speed bump behind the Union Hotel in Occidental after riding the Marshall Wall Grasshopper route. Man, I was tired. The hotel room in San Francisco for the Giro is probably my very favorite though; priceless!
Goals for 2008: Race the second race in the Tuesday night "world championships", and do well in the first one.
Community outreach activities: During the summer I lead a women's only road ride that works to help women feel more comfortable riding in groups and become more confident in their riding abilities, as well as learn a lot of the local roads and cycling routes.
Advice to young women who want to race: Find other girls that do it and it's like a pace line, you'll get sucked right along. Also, figure out what works best for your body's needs in nutrition and you've won a huge part of the battle!
