Race #1 cont....

My first crit in two years, and my second since 2001. It was great having Rita to race with the entire race, with Claire up the road in the break and Michelle and Denise hanging tough to finish one of their first crits ever! The decisive break came early; I spent a moment trying to bridge, until I remembered it had been awhile and I would likely blow, and I was better off conserving in the field. It was a huge field, more than 60 girls. The girls were strong, and motivated, but there were quite a few sketchy moves, and I personally witnessed the most spectacular crash Ive ever seen. Going fast into the right hand corner onto Corporate Center Parkway, a girl took the corner too tight and somehow managed to careen through the air across the road, over the haybale and into the other lane of the parkway. I heard she only suffered minor injuries, and miraculously not one other rider went down that I saw. I finished in the main field sprint, maybe in the upper middle? My rusty crit skills were evident, as after staying in the top 10 all race, I lost position in the final lap and was too far back for the final sprint. Man, it was fun, though. Crits are fun!
