Surf City Finals
Dirt Made Sarahs Lunch at Surf City!
Okay all of you with children will appreciate the fact that I am (unfortunately) usually stuck with childrens songs in my head during a race. I had the Dirt Made My Lunch song by Banana Slug String Band in my head as I maneuvered through this sloppy peanut butter CX Course. I chose not to pre-ride the course and just ran for a warm-up to save my bike from getting weighed down by 10 pounds of mud. I am not joking I guess they had to change the course the day of the race as the fairgrounds did not want us on the lawn. It turned out to be a super spectator-friendly course where you could see nearly the entire race unfold from the start. The course started on a flat paved road with a 180-degree slippery turn down to the mud pit. This was my kind of race and I knew it from the start. I love having to get off and run through ankle deep mud and I quickly grabbed the lead, as we zig-zagged around a horse barn before hitting the next mud pit. There were two sets of two barriers total and a run up that was so muddy, I was slipping down it. It was the longest run-up of the year, appx 60 meters but slippery and tough. At one point I slid through the course and got my bike stuck on a pole- brakes were not needed on this course. Thankfully the announcer could see us the whole time as when I went the wrong way mid course, he announced it over the speaker to get me back on course. I am not sure how large our field was but I was psyched for my first win of the year and will move up to the next category next week when we go back to Santa Cruz. Chris my hubby and I both won, he won the B series and I got 2nd in the Cs as I missed one of the races. I have to mention the prizes. Chris received a Fox rain coat, a nice hat, a sweet Sheila Moon Fleece, a cyclocomputer, and some other random things. I received: a light up pin that had a corroded battery, a rubber ducky, a stuffed animal keychain, a plastic bracelet, and a water bottle advertising Good Vibrations - a company that also included its magazine in my prize bag selling everything from personal lubricants to the $137 Hitachi Magic Wand. I think they even gave me some samples of the lubricant. I am definitely not complaining, I just find it a little odd. Alrighty until next week where we hope for more mud and rainy races as that is what CX is all about!!!
