TransAlp Challenge
http://transalp.upsolutmv.com/en/Julia Violichs Report
The Low Down: Thursday afternoon July 29th...definately suffering from sleep deprevation and physical exhaustion. Yes, my tummy still hurts from all the hammer gel, and yes, chamois butter is a life saver... I can honestly say that i worked harder than i have ever worked on a bicycle. 8 days of racing does funky stuff to the body for sure. After the 7th day, I finished shaking wildly, almost couldnt stand up without assisance and definately saw stars. Brutal. And the best part of all....I dont have to do it ever again. Instead I can hang out happily with my little man Luca. Thanks again to all the companies that supported us: Cytosport, American Classic, Conti, Mavic, Clif bar (if i never see another...), QBP, and i am sure i am missing others!
We successfully survived the 2004 transalp challenge. In a nut shell (because that is about all the energy i have right now), we rocked the house. Had a slow start, but ended up finishing 14th overall (out of 85 starting teams) with our best finish of 13th place on the last day. We were riding with the best of the best. Honestly, the worlds most talented endurance riders were there.
We rode to exhaustion 8 days in a row, climbing over 75,000 feet (that is a lot of feet) and almost 500 miles. Although we did do a few road ascents and descents most of the trails were dirt and most of the descents super challenging.
We were fortunate enough to have a support crew: Patchen Homitz, My pop Paul, and my brother Adam. They enable us to never stop pedaling and to race hard with only one technical. Without these three....it would have been off the charts difficult.
Patchen will be putting on a slide show in a few months for those who might be crazy enough to want to try something like this...Ill let you know when we choose a date.
