Cathys NVDC Report

The Napa Valley Dirt Classic was as much fun as I remembered. From glorious snaky single track to nasty steep granny-gear climbs to loose rutted descents overlooking Pope Valley, it was all good. Penny and I lined up with small group of Pro/Expert women, including Megan from Soulcraft and Abbie from WTB. I think this was the 6th time Ive done this race, the last time being 1999...including racing on a cross bike one year after waking up with a broken derailleur.This years race was admittedly much slower than past versions for this racer, but I didnt have any less of a great time. I finished 3rd, and Penny finished 4th. A good day for the NorCalVelo women!

Cathy and Penny race the Napa Valley Dirt Classic

First of all I was so happy to see Cathy Crawford, as well as former member Meghan at the start line. Very few women showed up for this race for some reason, maybe the threat of rain. It could be downright lonely on the course if not for the sport men converging on you constantly. It was perfect racing weather though, cool and a little sun peeking out now and again. This course has some sweet single track so I always enjoy racing in Angwin. The race director, Michael Hallie does a really great job of putting on this race, it is well organized and well marked.

The first part of the course was pretty smooth. The rutted slippery descents are saved for the end just before you get to climb your heart out. The climb out of Pope Valley did seem a little longer than usual today, but the rest of the race seemed shorter than usual so I guess it all evens out. The best part of Angwin though is those whoop-de-doos, where you get to fly down steep rocky descents and hope you have enough momentum to carry you up the other side. Think roller coaster, only without the seat belt and with little drop-offs.

Post race raffle almost always bags you a little schwag so what is not to like about this race?
