Did you know that Hanford is SO VERY FAR AWAY?!?!?! As I was making my way down there Saturday after a morning training ride, after a few hours behind the wheel, I was thinking to myself, "Gosh, this is quite far to go and race." And then I hit Fresno and still had yet to reach my destination, I realized, boy this is really quite far to go and race. But I arrived just in time to join Denise and Lindsay and Denise’s relatives for dinner—they’d arrived a day earlier in order to do the Orosi road race—and got plenty of sleep for the next day's race. (Thank you so much to Denise’s lovely family for putting us up for the weekend!)I so rarely say this about a course, but the Hanford crit course is actually a super fun course… wide roads, good pavement, not a lot of bots-dots and not your typical boring 4-turn loop. It's shaped like a lopsided hourglass, so plenty of turns—2 lefts, 6 rights—to keep things interesting. It wasn't a very large field at all (probably because the race is SO FAR AWAY), 22 girls at the start. But there were a few strong girls present, and I targeted a couple in particular that I knew would be in contention for the win. Both Lindsay and I focused on staying near the front; Lindsay is getting so good at anticipating an attack! It wasn't a crazy fast race, overall fairly manageable, but one thing that did stand out as something I need to work on is improving my fitness so I don't take so long to recover after a surge in the pace or an attack… that, and of course, my finishing sprint. In the end, all three of us worked hard, with me and Lindsay finishing 7th and 8th.
Not my best race, but not bad. Next up, a local race for me, the Martinez criterium.
