12 Hours of Humboldt

My friend Rhonda (Team MadCat) and I celebrated the 1-year anniversary of our Telluride-to-Moab hut-to-hut mtb trip with a little mountain bike race! 12 hours of Humboldt.Together we rode just over 11 hours, completed 13 laps- that’s 104 miles, and 17,160 feet of climbing. That earned us a 1st place in the Women’s Expert 2-person category.
The course was beautiful: an 8 mile loop in the Redwood Community Forest just East of downtown Arcata. The loop started with a burly climb, then a little more climbing, then a quick fireroad descent, a little more climbing, some singletrack… more climbing… Lots of climbing! The loop ended with a funny little singletrack section which routed you through trees with yellow caution tape. This was a nice change of tempo as you prepared to pass the staging area and hand off the baton or head up the climb again.
Rhonda is a great teammate! Always smiling, having fun, and FAST! The only thing about racing with a friend is that you don’t really get to spend any time together. I did very much enjoy hanging out with her MadCat teammates Joe, Joey, Brian, Yvette, and Kyle. Add in boyfriend Kyle and Dean Wallace, and you’ve still got a couple joeys and a couple kyles. Really? Funny. Too bad Rhonda’s husband Joey couldn’t make it- that would’ve made 3 joeys.
While Rhonda and I rode 13 laps together, my friend Dean Wallace (Breakaway Bikes) rode 13 solo on his singlespeed! Awesome. This earned him 2nd place in the event. Wow Dean!
Scary part of this race: The stick wielding hippie/ a.k.a. “forest creature”---- There was a guy in the woods who hit a racer with a big stick, then ran off into the woods. He was confronted by a sheriff deputy and hit that guy on the neck (bad move! Felony assault I think….). Until we knew he’d been caught it was a bit scary heading off into the woods and not knowing if that guy was still out there. Very Arcata. Charming.
I would definitely do this event again (with a can of pepper spray) :)
