Lake Sonoma Special

First of all, some good laughs were had at the start line-à we were collectively singing, and debating the de-merits of, a couple really awful rock songs--- “Solid as a Rock” and “We built this City on Rock and Roll”… Probably inspired by Fritz, who was seriously rockin’ the mullet. Memorable.
This race was at a unique time (5:30 pm start) and new route. It was a figure 8 from the Liberty Glen Campground, and included a technical descent and road climb on the first loop, then some smooth swoopy singletrack and a hike-a-bike to finish on the second loop. I had a great race: enjoyed the course and felt strong.
And, the awards for this race--- Fruit! 1st place Watermelon, 2nd Place Cantelope, 3rd place 3 Bananas. Jen Scott and I both got Watermelons ;-)

I asked Kevin what he wanted to do for his birthday and he said "Lake Sonoma." So I found myself on the start line with Shannon trying to best Fritz's "worst song that you could have on the running loop of your brain" during your climbing moments of pain. I am happy to say that my brain didn't attach itself to any of the sang examples. I can't even remember what the song was that I did have in my head. My goal for this race /ride was to finish it all in one piece and to enjoy myself. I managed to do both. I was super proud of Shannon as she flew away from me as we hit the trail. She's been putting in the miles and it shows. Descending, I realized just how my mtb skills have been momentarily replaced by road time. I walked things that felt over my head and nailed the climbs as best I could. I ended up giving my pump to a guy with a flat and raced with a returning mountain biker Suzanne in her first race in 7 years! She ran out of water half way through and knowing how bad that can be, I shared some of mine. I'm glad I wore a water pack. I had a great time getting back into my little lady marmalade (mtb bike). The second part of the course was a blast! Kevin was laughing at me as I came to the line and I just couldn't stop laughing back at him. He won the Sport men class in his 3rd mtb race ever! and everybody made him blush by singing the birthday song! Which made me even more giddy! Shannon won first in Expert women and I won a watermelon in the sport class. That was the best day I've had in a while!
