The race course was an 11 miles circuit consisting of two climbs. The temperature was 101 degrees with 8 mph winds. There were about 30 competitor out to race four laps in my group. The whistle blows and we're off. I haven't seen the course so I'm thinking the first lap will be a preview then I'll throw down. Ha ... Low and behold there was no waiting around, on the first climb two women are on the attack. I am hanging on for dear life. Finally over the second climb and we've (they've) shattered the field, we are a group of three off the front - the race is ON! We descend into the wind and I find myself struggling to take pulls as we rotate to share the work to stave off the field behind. This section of the course I find far more challenging then the climb because it's a false flat with a side head wind for about 6 miles. Ouch! The next three laps my legs have finally come to life. In the final kilometer we jockey for position. I am finding myself in the perfect position, sheltered from the wind with 200 meters to go. This is a long false flat sprint into the wind. With 150 meters to go I shift down a gear and give it all I've got and take the win by more then 3 bike lengths!
